Why must there be so much hate?

Doesn’t there seem to be an abundance of HATE in the world today? It appears to be lurking globally based on the news in Egypt, Jordan, Sudan, and of course Afghanistan as well as the Tragedy in Tucson to name a few. Hate prowls on our local street corners with murder, hi-jacking, gangs, shooting deaths, child abuse and most pronounced to me is the bullying that occurs amongst our children.
I don’t proclaim to discern the solution to this quandary of revulsion and abhorrence; the inability to tolerate the views of other individuals or clusters of folk. I could go into a legion of ways to solve the evils but that appears futile.
However, what I do recognize is extreme dislike is not a new concept to me evidenced of this poem I penned back when I was a youngster of seventeen. I might have written the same words forty plus years later.

"Hate"
February, 1977

jabbing, frigidly cold,
loneliness, fear
black, darkness
unpleasant, striking
dirty, cluttered
hard, blaring, loud
harsh, sour
yelling, wailing, running, leading to
DEATH-

"Those who hate most fervently must have once loved deeply; those who want to deny the world must have once embraced what they now set on fire.”
Kurt Tucholsky

Another wonderful post Tracy, I too ponder this same issue. Ever wonder what would happen if every form of news media said, "Enough, from now on only good news." Sensationalism I fear builds the beast.

That's a good poem, even at that young age you had a way with words. You need to publish them.

I yelled at the TV, "is there anything to report that is good?"... I have learned to turn off the TV instead. I know there has always been hate in the world. Is it worse or its just what the news folks think they need to report? Do we need to hear of another shooting and put the demented smiling face of the killer on the screen? Or are these truly the end times where the bible says there will be so much going on weather wise to destruction countries. All the prophecies have been fulfilled in the bible... Are now waiting for the lords return?

Prayers go out to all those that are hurting.

It's very sad. Sometimes I wonder where in the human being all that spite builds up and how the conscience doesn't stop a person from violent acts. I mean, "Can't we all just get along?" sounds hokey, but really... we have the capability to channel or vent anger in non-destructive ways, and we have the ability to discourse and disagree civilly. It's hard to understand why people act as they do.

I think it seems there so much hate, sorrow, etc... mostly because the mass media exploits these stories -- they equal ratings, unfortunately.

Similar things happened 50, 100 years ago, but people weren't so unindated with it.

I agree with Nancy's comment. I think it spreads so much more easily these days with constant media bombardments from every technology available. There was no shortage of hate a century ago. We just had to read about it the "slow" way - if it was reported at all...

Fabulous post, Tracy... Unfortunately--it is all true. I don't know why there is so much hate.. Like you say, it starts with the bullying..

In other countries, that is all they know. They have grown up with hate and killing all around them. Some have to do it in order to stay alive. Some cultures think that God wants them to kill others so that they can take over the world... GADS!!!

Here, we have too many violent TV shows and games available--so kids think it is normal... We are also living in a "ME" generation--where everyone is out for himself. Kids have lost respect for others --and they learn it from their families...

BUT--that being said, there was violence many years ago, long before TV. SO--why the hate???? I have no idea --but it is extremely sad, and just seems to be getting worse.

Hugs,
Betsy

Very poignant words, wish there was an easy way to stop it all.I wonder if progress has pushed it, when you see what others have so much of , you wish to have the same. When I traveled in many countries the peoples concept of all here in the US was we all had everything we wanted. I tried to explain growing up in the inner city and they were amazed. It would be nice for those with abundance to spread it out for progams needed,it is silly people are starving in this world.I think it is hard to figure where to start, and we have delayed all of that by not enforcing helping and loving all right in our homes, always looking for that better life.

Agree with Betsy.
My son fought in Afganistain. He told me that the biggest problem over there is much of what you see on the news from there is so imbeded into their culture, you are fighting a belief system which unfortuntly is full of hate. Sad, sad situation where you think of the pack mentality and you have their culture.

I've heard it said there's a fine line between hate and love. And I choose to believe it's all due to passion. It's a shame that those who are so very passionate in their beliefs don't decide to handle their passions with love and acceptance instead of violence. And I keep thinking that if I just keep holding out for the love of the world, eventually the LOVE army will overcome the HATE army. Pollyanna-ish? Maybe, but it works for me!!

I think it is the signs of the time...Satan is trying so hard to ruin peoples lives. We must all be so sure that we are filled with love and busy loving others. :D

I agree with Nancy. The bullying going on in schools and neighborhoods makes my skin crawl.

A good poem and a good post.

Yep! I don't want to think of life as a series of hateful incidents on the news and in the papers. Usually I can drown it out and just enjoy my life, but not always. It does seem like the world is full of hate right now. Much of it in our own country...

Hi Tracy... I like the poem. You're right, hate is everywhere. My hubby is a fox news junkie and you know how that goes?!

Thank you for sharing your profound words
with us .
May love prevail in our lives as we choose to live life without the destruction of hatred.
I think this is one reason blogging has become such a calming force in my life it is a way to balance life with positive input while eliminating the negative that blares at me from the world around me .
Hugs and smiles coming to you from me :)
Until Next Time

I often ponder these same thoughts. Grief, Despair, People dying every where. Too much violence on TV - computer games the fuel the dark side. Where will it end.

There is only one way to stop it and that is with the children. How to reach them is the problem. They so desperately need good role models. I do feel your pain.

Lots to think about here today. Sometimes us humans have come so far... and in other ways we still haven't changed or learned anything...

Harsh and insightful words for one so very young. Were you depressed or just thoughtful? Very affecting, rather stream of conciousness. The world will only contine to get worse, I fear..our Eden is long ago and far away. The bible says there will always be war and bad times.

what a beautiful and haunting poem, especially when written at such a young age

Yes, I can't watch the news constantly. I see the headlines and follow them occasionally on the Internet, however. But that's one reason I'm a writer perhaps; I can "control" the evil and see justice done, even if it is in the imagined space of a novel.

Well I think your right..over the past few days I read and saw some things I wish I didn't ..or really wish wasn't happening. Made me think of Lk:7- "he who has been forgiven little loves little". I think it's hard for people to let go, but then how can all that crud get delt with? My thoughts..

That poem says it all. I don't understand all the hate in our world either. So much of it is passed on from one generation to the next in some cultures. It's sad that it is so prevalent all over the world.
